Here is the full paragraph:

Quote
The find is some 84 miles west of the Haifa port and three miles deep. They named it Leviathan after the Biblical sea monster. Three Israeli energy companies in cooperation with the Houston Texas Noble Energy announced initial estimates that the field contained 16 trillion cubic feet of gas—making it the world’s biggest deep-water gas find in a decade, adding more discredit to “peak oil” theories that the planet is about to see dramatic and permanent shortages of oil, gas and coal. To put the number in perspective, that one gas field, Leviathan, would hold enough reserves to supply Israel’s gas needs for 100 years.

Engdahl went from a PO believer to a believer in abioitic and now, it seems, he is a believer in loads of energy waiting to be found.

This guy is very intelligent, yet his article cites 3.4 billion barrels of oil as though it is a huge find. I don't entirely trust this guy, not least because his reasoning doesn't stand up to scrutiny - peak means maximum supply point never to be exceeded. How does finding 3.4 billion barrels of oil make even the slightest dent in global oil supply depletion?

What is his agenda? The implicit message when people say there is adequate oil left, is one of "more industrial growth is a good thing".

Please join this forum Mr Engdahl - we'd love to debate energy issues with you.

So glad to discover we're not running out of hydrocarbons, we're only running out of optimism.

 ::) Thanks, Billy. :laugh:
The answer to how the sham of Belgium's existence could be pulled off is simple: we weren't vigilant enough. We let them gain the power over us needed to distort reality to fit their fiendish plans. But it's not too late. The truth can still be made known.

Sigh. Engdahl has written some amazing geopolitical/economic pieces. I don't get his stupidity on this.

Here is the article where Engdahl explains his Damascene conversion.

Confessions of an “ex” Peak Oil Believer

He falls at the first fence. His first comment is: "The good news is that panic scenarios about the world running out of oil anytime soon are wrong". This is the straw man argument that is used, again and again, to avoid having to address the real issue of an energy plateau, and its corollary, supply and demand imbalance.

As I said above, Engdahl is very smart, so does he genuinely believe in the ludicrous notion of oil wells magically refilling? Maybe he does, but anyone who applies critical thinking to the issues would not fall into that trap. And his cheap jibe - "Texas banker Matt Simmons" speaks volumes, at least to me, as does "dead dinosaur remains". He is trying to smear and ridicule.

My hunch is Engdahl has a blind spot. I could be wrong, but I just cannot believe that someone as intelligent as Engdahl, uses such cheap jibes in his analysis. Nor can I believe any intelligent person throws out such an easily demolished statement as "The good news is that panic scenarios about the world running out of oil anytime soon are wrong".

The "panic scenarios" jibe is the giveaway imo.

@ Jimmy McNulty - yes, some of his analyses are damned insightful.

Edited for clarification of a point.

1 billion barrels = 12 days global oil use.

So, Engdahl just pushed back peak by a month.

Even a one trillion barrel field would only supply global demand for ~15 years, given URR and demand growth.

so if a mass of fairies appeared and all whacked off ejaculating a cyclone of sweet light crude , refilling every single field , overnight . oil dropped to 10 dollars a barrel , would that be a good thing ?

or would we have the same fucking problems of too many people using fossil fuels all at the same fucking time ?   >:D

@ Ches - your usual inimitable style - haha.

@ dermot - I have a list (a mental one anyway) of sites that purport to be anti-NWO, alt, etc, that I think are heat sinks (a term I've used before). I won't name them but they tend to have have one defining characteristic: they all promote growth or avoid saying there are limits. Some of these sites depict anyone who suggests unlimited growth is a bad idea as "Club of Rome fascists".

Disinfo takes many forms.

Awareness of the issues emanating from PO lead one to take steps to do something proactive. Those people who avidly devour " It's disgraceful the way the US behaves!" will simply keep on devouring more of the same.

And since when was gas considered oil? Can't make plastic out of gas, can you?

Sure you can.

http://inhabitat.com/scientist-produces-plastic-from-natural-gas/

As scientists and companies work to get around the ever constricting noose of peak oil, I imagine we will just keep seeing more things like this happening. I think conservation is still a better long term solution, but it only makes sense considering how much natural gas we have versus remaining oil.
